The College of Business and Economics continues to demonstrate that engagement with the outside world sets a great example for everyone connected to the College, and is a vital component in propelling us to the next level of excellence.

Past generations of higher education institutions saw little engagement compared to today's activities and limited themselves to comfort zones of that specific college or the university campus. Today's environment is a much different story. As Shakespeare said in The Merry Wives of Windsor, "The world is your oyster."

We choose to heighten our engagement each day because we believe it makes us a better college. For example, Dr. John Deskins, director of the College's Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER), and I spoke at the Manufacturing Leadership Summit at Glade Springs Resort earlier this month. Hosted by the West Virginia Manufacturers Association, we were among speakers that covered subjects ranging from energy to international trade to business.

The rebirth of manufacturing in West Virginia and throughout the United States is also particularly important as B&E readies for the launch of Supply Chain Management as an area of emphasis within the Department of Management. Generous gifts to the College have enabled us to structure a curriculum that prepares students for these high demand jobs. Our engagement with the manufacturing community within West Virginia and around the world helped guide us in the ultimate structuring of this exciting area of study.

Under the leadership of Dr. Deskins, the BBER also now provides the Mountain State Business Index, the first-ever monthly report on West Virginia's economy. Policymakers, the business community and thought leaders inside and outside our state are paying close attention to this report generated within B&E.

Our engagement also includes the College's outstanding outreach efforts. B&E Magazine was presented the coveted Crystal Award this month by the Public Relations Society of America for excellence in its outreach to the audiences that are so important to this College.

Through participation and the sharing of ideas, B&E's engagement continues its rapid rise — part of our vision to become "Better. Bigger. Ranked."
